The Chicken and The ....
One of the primary obstacles that I see in business and learning with regards to technology is the continued emphasis on the device.  The device being either the hardware or the software.  Unfortunately, as I have always stressed, these are not important for getting results, becoming an Ultimate User relies on you becoming aware that you are the center of the solution universe.  That the problem begins, ends, and revolves around your actions and interaction with the technology.  The computer is just a prop.

Recently, I read a newspaper article that was lamenting the wonders of teaching technology.  I was excited to read this because I thought, finally, it is hitting the mainstream.  Then I was disappointed because once again they were not talking about teaching technology but new tools to use for the 'benefit' of teaching through technology.

The Computer is Just A Prop


I just shook my head.  What teaching needs is not new tools, no matter how well they are made, no matter how easy they are too use, they are pointless if the focus is on the tool and not the user.  It's like saying that a hammer builds a table, or a car goes to the grocery.  A tool is a tool, destined to be no better or worst than the person who is trying to use it.

Time and again, I have been approached by educators that understand and want access to technology and they all suffer from the one chronic problem; namely, as they put it, "they are illiterate about this stuff."  Here is a classroom filled with technology tools to make their job easier yet they can't get the most out of it because the user is not in the equation.

The problem is not just an educational one, the problem affects all fields and industry.  Companies spend thousands of dollars for software package, buying only the base support package which might include some basic training but they stop there.  There has been a number of times I have walked in to an office where a great software solution was purchased six months before and it has been shelved because it 'did not do what they wanted'.  The problem was not the software, the problem was not the hardware, the problem was squarely in the hands of the person at the keyboard.

There is a select, very select group of people that possess the skills to sit down at any keyboard on any operating system using any software and immediately get results without manuals, without training, and without assistance of any kind.  You may not have one on staff but you can pick up the skills.

You don't need special tools or hardware , you need specific education and a reframing of how you approach technology between your own ears to get results.

If you own a business, don't spend another dime on hardware or software, if your a teacher understand that technology education has nothing to do with tools its about thinking about what you want, choosing the best tools for the process and stepping through it.  With the Ultimate User Technology Success System, I always tell people the first thing to do is turn off the computer and then we can get started.
