Finding and Living your Dreams Through Technology
How many Mozarts have live and died since
he finished his last symphony? How many songs never got song? How
many Einsteins and Edisons never had the opportunity to push the
envelope of human development? How many times could cancer have
been eliminated? Imagine the sum total of human knowledge in the
vastness of Alexandria never brought to life? That has been the
world before technology.
Beyond the wires and silicone of
technology is the fundamental nature of human- the will to achieve.
Unfortunately, way to often, achievement lies in ruins at the alter
of access. Access to information, tools, people that can lift one
out of the environment that holds them back, gain access to
mentors, and put in one’s hands tools greater and more
magnificent then those that built the Great Wall of China or the
Pyramids of Giza, in short put the dream back in the dreamer.
History Repeats
Since the dawn of human civilization only
the few had the power and the position to dictate the outcome of
the many. The Lords and Ladies decreed that the serfs and fifes had
their station. God-forbid the peasants and forget about them. Time
progress and nobility gave way a new monarchy based upon deep
pockets and selective arrangement; large corporations now dictated
value and station. Only the select few may gain access to the great
vault of wealth and prosperity. From front-line assembly to desktop
secretary the pecking order dictated who you were and what you did.
Much too the dismay of those stuck in daydreams of better
lives.
Lives where living was by choice and not
station, lives where equal truly means equal in all respects, not
just politically correct notions of sex, religion, race but in the
greater sense as living to your fullest with no barriers between
what you want to achieve and what you aspire to be in your own grey
matter. A life full of potential, possibilities, adventure, and
dreams that come true in spite of education, income, and
environment this is where everyone aches to be but always seems to
fall short and end up only living someone else’s dreams be it
behind a desk or on the shop floor.
The power of the dream extends far beyond
the person, many times over, and begs for its place waiting for the
right mechanism, the right process and possibility to live again.
To grow beyond the paycheck-to-paycheck, worries about devastating
financial ruin, and ultimately living to the end with regret,
bitterness, and fear of tomorrow. To the heartfelt dreamer, you
dream of a better life and wake up to the same old routine in spite
of hope, faith, and hard work.
Enter the age of knowledge
Long ago is some back room at some
university a small box churned out 1’s and 0’s from
there that box was connected to another then another until today we
have the modern Oracle of Delphi- the Internet. Total access, total
control to not just a small group but to the world, we had come
full circle creating the final word in human development a tool
possessed of all our traits but none of the baggage and controlled
by no one group or person. We can dream again and overcome the
blockades created by the select few.
Why do record company’s cringe at
the Internet? Why do book publisher’s whine about web
publishing not being real publishing? They are running scare;
it’s not about losing money- which they are but not for the
reasons they cite, it’s not about stealing from their
artists, it’s about control over the environment and their
right to decide what should and should not be produced. It’s
about the aristocracy of the corporation suddenly realizing that
they are not the sum total of the universe, that they can no longer
just wave their arms and have the masses fall to their knees for
breadcrumbs. They can no longer decide what should or should not be
released to the masses. The universe of access now belongs to all
of us.
You no longer need to be a multi-billion
dollar corporation to release a product, produce a record, or
release a book. All you need is a computer connected to the
Internet and it doesn’t even have to be in your home. Though
they still may control many avenues and access points, as they are
finding out, YouTube, MySpace, and their kind are gaining steam and
encroaching upon their sacred grounds. In time they will whither
within they own protected sphere and disappear into the vapor.
Access Granted
The dreamer has access. The dreamer has
the tools. The dreamer need only learn how to create and the
corporation will fall and every one, with access, will be equal in
capacity and capability.
Long gone are the days when Stephen King
types would receive 100 rejections before someone would put his
words in print. Where some small group in some ivory tower decided
this is the music or fashion or product that should be allow; human
ingenuity has jilted its connection to those select few and opted
to be whole again. Searching for answer, making the answer
available, and right, wrong, or indignant changing the world of
commerce to the ultimate in niche marketing- how specific can you
be and how to give it to even the smallest group of one. We are no
longer markets, we are individuals.
In the corporate world, they rile against
the machine and vivify those that use them and sue, poke, and prod
to get their way and in the end they create a bigger following
through a global backlash because the cure to their limitation is
of greater importance. If only they had gone with the flow of
technology and not against they would have found a greater
understand of the new order and their place in it. They would have
learned to accept technology and used it to work for them. Learn to
talk anew to the people and give them what they want the way we
want through the same technologies available to everyone- instead
they spite the very customers they need for their margins.
Tools Released
All the tools of knowledge laid out naked
before the world. Marketing, production, accounting information
just a click away the modern oracle of Delphi replete with the
ability to anticipate the outcome of requests; information belongs
to every one.
What of the tools. Software in all its
glory, all its capabilities, and all it’s cost. Three, 4, 5
figures pricing giving way to free and open source the programmers
figured it out the value is not in the tool but the ability to help
others use the tool. Give them the tool and they will come back for
help to use it. Value begets return. I new shift in business
thinking! Why then have the corporations not caught on? Open source
products, open source marketing, open source thinking, freedom to
think and act as we see fit. Profit as a product of support not an
expense. Open source should mean open for business.
Software is a tool, like the hammer or
saw. It creates only by the hands of the one wielding it. It
produces only as a ghost to the keys and clicks that manage it. The
person is empowered. Not just empowered, endeared, and technology
is a catalyst for change, for hope, for freedom and rights.
Corporations and governments alike fear
the people. Real people with real access and real thoughts who will
not be shut down or shunned, who will not be herded like sheep to
the shears who will not accept their truth developed through sound
bites and PR firms. We know the truth and you’re only fooling
the ones still absence from the machine. This will change; access
is inevitable.
We the people, has a new custodian-us, the
people it was designed for in the first place. Our dream, our
rights, our liberties dictated by no one but ourselves; our
choices, our way; it is that time. The people’s voice will
endure despite your efforts.
Dream to Live
So dream, then dream bigger. It is all
yours. You want to be a rock star, grab your computer make a CD,
make a video, put it on Amazon and YouTube, build your web site and
offer it for sale. Build your following one fan or customer at a
time. You are the label and you don’t need the record
company. It may happen faster by avoiding them because you control
the outcome. Your hard work fills your pockets and your soul.
You don’t know how, you will learn
just Google it or Ask it. Believe me, you’re not the first to
consider your problem and someone, somewhere has put it on the
web.
You can’t fathom how big the
Internet really is.
For the writer, inventor, or any dreamer
looking for their own star, it is all there for the taking. Learn
the tools, learn the process (it is on the web), then make it real.
You may have the cure for what ails this planet; you may have the
thought that changes human destiny. In their hands, we may never
know and we will hobble along for another 1000 years but in your
hands you could change the world.
For the culprits trying to cease and
desist this revolution a requiem, “Here lies the dream
killers, they learned to late.”
Use your technology as the ultimate
dreamcatcher.
